What Is Robinhood?
Robinhood Markets, Inc. is an American financial services company founded in 2013 by Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, two Stanford physics graduates who met at college and later worked together on Wall Street. The company is headquartered in Menlo Park, California and has been publicly traded on the Nasdaq since July 2021 under the ticker symbol HOOD.
The founding idea was straightforward but radical for its time: make investing accessible to everyone, not just the wealthy. When Robinhood launched, buying a stock required paying a commission — typically $5–$10 per trade — to a broker like Charles Schwab or Fidelity. This meant that small, retail investors were effectively penalized for investing modest amounts of money. A $10 commission on a $100 investment is a 10% headwind before the trade even begins.
Robinhood eliminated commissions entirely. It launched commission-free stock trading through a clean, simple mobile app designed for people who had never invested before. The idea resonated immediately — particularly with younger Americans who had grown up on smartphones and were skeptical of traditional financial institutions. Within a few years, Robinhood had tens of millions of users and had effectively forced the entire brokerage industry to go commission-free as well. Charles Schwab, TD Ameritrade, and Fidelity all eliminated commissions in 2019 — a direct response to Robinhood's competitive pressure. In that sense, Robinhood has already permanently changed how retail investing works in America, regardless of what happens to the company going forward.
How Does Robinhood Make Money?
A natural question is: if trades are commission-free, how does the company generate revenue? The answer involves several mechanisms, and understanding them is essential to understanding the investment thesis.
Payment for Order Flow (PFOF) When a Robinhood user places a trade, Robinhood doesn't send that order directly to a stock exchange. Instead, it routes the order to a market maker — a large financial firm like Citadel Securities or Virtu Financial — which executes the trade and pays Robinhood a small fee for the privilege of doing so. This fee is called payment for order flow. The market maker profits by executing at slightly favorable prices; Robinhood profits from the routing fee; and the user gets a commission-free trade. PFOF is the foundation of Robinhood's equities and options revenue and represents approximately 32% of total revenue. It is also the subject of ongoing regulatory scrutiny, which is discussed in the risk section.
Options Trading Revenue Robinhood's largest single revenue line is options trading. Options are financial contracts that give the buyer the right — but not the obligation — to buy or sell a stock at a specific price before a specific date. They are inherently more complex than stocks and generate significantly higher revenue per transaction for Robinhood through PFOF. Options trading has grown rapidly on the platform as Robinhood's user base has matured and sought more sophisticated tools. In Q2 2026, options generated $342 million — more than any other single revenue line.
Cryptocurrency Trading Robinhood allows users to buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and dozens of others. Unlike equities, crypto markets are open 24/7 and are not subject to PFOF rules, so Robinhood earns revenue through a bid-ask spread on each crypto transaction. Crypto was once Robinhood's fastest-growing segment — generating $268M in a single quarter at its 2025 peak — but has since declined significantly as crypto market activity cooled.
Prediction Markets (Event Contracts) One of the most significant recent additions to Robinhood's revenue mix is event contracts, commonly known as prediction markets. These are contracts that allow users to bet on the outcome of real-world events — elections, sports results, economic data releases, geopolitical outcomes, and more. Users buy contracts that pay out $1 if an event occurs and $0 if it doesn't. Robinhood earns a take rate on each transaction. This segment went from zero revenue to $156M in a single quarter and has already surpassed crypto as a revenue line. It is Robinhood's fastest-growing product.
Robinhood Gold (Subscription Revenue) Robinhood Gold is the company's premium subscription tier, currently priced at $5/month. Gold subscribers receive higher interest rates on uninvested cash, access to professional research, instant deposit of larger amounts, and margin borrowing at lower rates. Gold now has 4.8 million subscribers, generating approximately $54M per quarter in highly predictable, recurring revenue that grows regardless of market conditions.
Margin Lending (Net Interest Income) Robinhood offers margin accounts — accounts where users can borrow money from Robinhood to invest more than they have in cash. Robinhood charges interest on these loans, just as a bank charges interest on a mortgage. The margin book — the total amount of money Robinhood has lent to customers — has grown explosively to $21.6 billion, generating hundreds of millions in annual interest income. This is one of the most reliable and rate-sensitive revenue streams in the business.
Robinhood Credit Card Launched in 2025, the Robinhood Gold Card is a credit card offering 3% cash back on all purchases — one of the most competitive rewards rates in the market. Robinhood earns interchange revenue every time a cardholder makes a purchase. The card had 500K+ cardholders within its first year and is growing rapidly. Revenue from the card reached $34M in Q2 2026, up from zero a year earlier.
Banking Services Robinhood Banking, launched in early 2026, offers checking and savings accounts with a 3.5% annual percentage yield — significantly above the national average. This is not just a product — it is a strategic moat-deepening initiative. A customer who uses Robinhood for their brokerage account, retirement account, credit card, AND checking account has essentially made Robinhood their entire financial life. This dramatically increases switching costs and lifetime customer value.
Agentic Trading (Emerging) Launched in May 2026, agentic trading allows users to connect third-party AI agents to a dedicated, ring-fenced Robinhood account. The AI agent can then trade autonomously on the user's behalf — executing strategies, managing positions, and reacting to market events 24/7. This is currently available for equities and options, with crypto and prediction markets being added next. Approximately 100,000 users had opened agentic accounts by end of Q2 2026. The long-term significance of this product is discussed extensively in the catalyst section.
Who Uses Robinhood?
Robinhood's user base is primarily younger, first-time investors. The platform's design — mobile-first, no minimums, simple interface — was specifically built for people who felt excluded from traditional finance. This demographic skew is both a strength and a debated characteristic:
- 01Strength: As this generation ages and accumulates wealth over the next 20–30 years, HOOD is already embedded as their financial home. The $68B in net deposits over the trailing twelve months demonstrates that users are actively consolidating more of their financial lives on the platform — not just using it for small, speculative trades.
- 02Debated: Robinhood has faced criticism for making high-risk products like options and crypto easily accessible to inexperienced investors, and for gamification elements that critics argue encourage excessive trading. These criticisms have resulted in regulatory scrutiny and significant fines in prior years, though the regulatory environment has been considerably more accommodating since 2025.
How Has the Business Evolved?
Robinhood's story in three distinct chapters:
Chapter 1: The Disruptor (2013–2020) Commission-free trading, rapid user growth, and a cultural moment during the pandemic when millions of Americans downloaded the app and began investing for the first time. The company became synonymous with retail investing but was also loss-making, burning cash, and generating significant controversy — particularly around the GameStop short squeeze in January 2021 when Robinhood restricted trading, infuriating millions of users.
Chapter 2: The Reckoning (2021–2023) The company went public in July 2021 at $38/share and immediately fell below its IPO price. The post-pandemic trading boom faded, crypto crashed, and Robinhood's revenues collapsed 25% in 2022. The stock fell as low as $6.56 — an 83% decline from IPO price. The company was widely written off. Layoffs followed, regulatory fines were paid, and the founding team refocused the business on sustainable, diversified revenue.
Chapter 3: The Platform (2024–present) The turnaround that most investors missed until it was well underway. Revenue grew 58% in FY2024 and 52% in FY2025. The company crossed into meaningful profitability — achieving a 42% net margin. New products launched in rapid succession: retirement accounts, the Gold Card, banking, prediction markets, agentic trading, and international expansion. The business that exists today is fundamentally different from the one that nearly collapsed in 2022 — it is broader, more profitable, less crypto-dependent, and better positioned competitively than at any point in its history.
Competitive Position
Robinhood competes across multiple dimensions simultaneously:
- 01vs. Traditional Brokers (Schwab, Fidelity, IBKR): HOOD wins on user experience, mobile-first design, and product innovation speed. It loses on institutional trust, breadth of research, and depth of traditional financial products. However, HOOD is closing that gap rapidly with banking, retirement, and advisory-adjacent services.
- 02vs. Coinbase: Both compete for crypto trading revenue. HOOD has the advantage of a broader product suite (equities, options, banking) that Coinbase lacks, but Coinbase has deeper institutional crypto credibility and a more sophisticated institutional offering via Bitstamp.
- 03vs. New Fintechs (SoFi, Webull): HOOD's primary advantages are brand recognition, scale (28.4M funded accounts vs. much smaller competitors), and the depth of its product ecosystem. No competitor has replicated the breadth of HOOD's offering under one app.
The moat Robinhood is building is not a single product advantage — it is the switching cost of an entire financial life consolidated in one place. A user with a brokerage account, IRA, credit card, checking account, and now an AI agent trading on their behalf at Robinhood faces enormous friction in leaving. That is the long-term competitive strategy, and it is the reason the banking and credit card launches matter far beyond their near-term revenue contribution.
02 · REVENUE SEGMENTS
REVENUE SEGMENTS
HOOD's revenue breaks into two primary buckets — transaction-based (volume-driven, cyclical) and other revenue (recurring, growing).
Transaction-Based Revenue (~58% of total)
| Segment | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | YoY Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Options | $342M | $265M | +29% |
| Event Contracts (Prediction Markets) | $156M | $0 | New |
| Equities | $129M | $66M | +95% |
| Cryptocurrencies | $100M | $160M | -38% |
| Total Transaction | $776M | $539M | +44% |
Key insight: Q2 2026 marked a historic milestone — prediction market revenue ($156M) exceeded crypto revenue ($100M) for the first time. This signals a structural diversification of HOOD's transaction revenue away from crypto cyclicality.
Other Revenue (~42% of total)
| Segment | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | YoY Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net Interest (Segregated Cash) | $60M | N/A | — |
| Gold Subscriptions | $54M | $44M | +23% |
| Robinhood Credit | $34M | $0 | New |
| Securities Lending | $10M | $34M | -71% |
| Proxy & Other | $143M | $93M | +54% |
| Total Other | ~$565M | ~$457M | +24% |
Key insight: Gold subscriptions and credit card revenue are the highest-quality lines — recurring, growing every quarter, and not tied to trading volumes. Gold at $54M/quarter represents a ~$216M annualized recurring revenue business growing 23% YoY.

| EPS | -$1.15 | -$0.62 | +$1.59 | +$2.09 | +$2.27 |
The transformation from serial losses to a ~42% net margin business in under three years is exceptional. HOOD is now one of the highest-margin brokerages in the industry — a direct consequence of its asset-light, software-driven revenue model.
Q2 2026 Quarterly Highlights
- 01Revenue: $1.341B (+34.5% YoY) — record quarter
- 02Adj. EBITDA Margin: 57%
- 03Net Income: $573M (+48.5% YoY)
- 04EPS: $0.62 vs. $0.41 estimate — 51% beat
- 05Net Deposits: $22B — record quarter
- 06Management guidance: FY2026 Adj. OpEx + SBC tightened to $2.675–$2.775B (lowered from prior range)
Earnings Beat History
HOOD has consistently beaten EPS estimates by 30–51% in recent quarters, suggesting Wall Street consensus systematically underestimates the business's earning power. This is an important context for forward estimates.

VALUATION — CURRENT PRICING & WHAT'S PRICED IN
Current Multiples vs. Peers
| Metric | HOOD | SCHW | IBKR | COIN | Industry Avg. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| P/E | ~40x | ~20x | ~35x | N/M | ~22x |
| EV/EBITDA | ~31x | ~9x | N/A | N/M | ~12x |

| Rev. Growth (1Y) | +51% | +6% | +11% | +9% | ~8% |
| Beta | 3.0 | 0.5 | 1.9 | 2.9 | — |
HOOD trades at a ~2x premium to the industry across nearly every metric. This is defensible only if the growth differential persists — HOOD grows roughly 6–8x faster than traditional peers.
Historical Multiple Compression
| Period | Stock Price | P/E | P/S | Key Driver |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 2024 | ~$11 | N/M | 5.3x | Near post-IPO lows, loss-making |
| Nov 2024 | ~$38 | 23x | 11x | Trump election, crypto/deregulation optimism |
| Oct 2025 (ATH) | $153.86 | 54x | 23x | Peak everything — crypto, multiples, sentiment |
| Mar 2026 | ~$69 | ~30x | ~12x | Crypto collapse, Q1 miss, market correction |
| Today | $93.37 | ~40x | ~16.5x | Partial recovery post-record Q2 |
The stock is 39% below its ATH despite the underlying business being fundamentally stronger — more diversified revenue, banking product live, prediction markets now a major revenue line, credit card scaling. The de-rating was driven by crypto volume decline, a Q1 miss, and broader market multiple compression — not by structural deterioration in the business.
What Is Currently Priced In
The market is already embedding:
- 01Revenue growth of ~25–35% annually for the next 2–3 years
- 02EBITDA margins sustaining above 50%
- 03Crypto revenue remaining at current depressed levels (~$100M/quarter)
- 04Gold subscribers continuing to grow at ~35–40% YoY
- 05Banking and credit card as early-stage but real contributors
The market is NOT yet pricing in:
- 01U.S. perpetual futures launch and revenue contribution
- 02Agentic trading at meaningful scale (>500K accounts)
- 03International monetization beginning to show up in revenue
- 04Prediction markets expanding internationally
- 05Platform multiple re-rating as revenue mix diversifies further
05 · THE CATALYST PIPELINE
THE CATALYST PIPELINE
Why the ATH is Achievable Without Crypto Recovery
The path to $154+ does not require crypto to recover. It requires HOOD's non-crypto businesses to compound for 6–8 more quarters. Here is where each catalyst stands today:
Catalyst 1: Prediction Markets — ALREADY EXECUTING
Current: $156M/quarter | 2027 Target: $700M–$1B annualized
Robinhood's Rothera prediction market exchange launched May/June 2026 and processed 2.1 billion contracts in its first month, becoming a top-3 Designated Contract Market. Prediction markets surpassed crypto as a revenue line in Q2 2026 — its second full quarter. Bernstein models this reaching $1.7B by 2028 (64% CAGR). World Cup trading drove records in July 2026. International expansion is in active exploration for 2027.
Timeline confidence: HIGH — already in motion
Catalyst 2: U.S. Perpetual Futures — IMMINENT
Current: $0 U.S. revenue | 2027 Target: $200–$400M annualized
The CFTC approved the first U.S. BTC perpetual futures contract on May 29, 2026, formally opening the regulatory pathway. Robinhood's website described U.S. perps as "coming soon" in April 2026. HOOD already runs perps in Europe and expanded to commodities/ETFs in July 2026. A U.S. launch in H2 2026 or Q1 2027 is the base case, not the bull case. This is a high-margin product with no meaningful U.S. retail competition on day one.
Timeline confidence: HIGH — regulatory barrier removed
Catalyst 3: Margin Book / Banking Interest Income — COMPOUNDING NOW
Current: $21.6B margin book (+127% YoY) | 2027 Target: $30–35B
This requires no new product launches — it's pure compounding on an existing base. Every dollar in the margin book earns ~2–3% net interest income. At $30B+, this becomes a ~$600–900M annual interest income business. Robinhood Banking (launched early 2026, $400M+ in assets) will deepen this further as customers consolidate their financial lives on the platform.
Timeline confidence: VERY HIGH — already happening
Catalyst 4: Credit Card Scaling — ON TRACK
Current: $34M/quarter (+from $0 one year ago) | 2027 Target: $100M+/quarter
The Gold Card had 500K+ cardholders with $8B in annual spend as of Q3 2025. Revenue has grown from $0 to $34M in four quarters with no signs of deceleration. Doubling cardholder count to 1M+ is achievable given the 4.8M Gold subscriber base as a natural conversion funnel.
Timeline confidence: MEDIUM–HIGH — trajectory is clear
Catalyst 5: Agentic Trading — EARLIEST INNINGS, BIGGEST LONG-TERM UPSIDE
Current: ~100K accounts, $100M+ in assets | 2027 Target: 500K+ accounts, material volume uplift
Launched May 2026 — equities only at launch, options being added, crypto and prediction markets next on the roadmap. 50K+ customers in the first weeks, trading millions of dollars per day. The strategic significance goes beyond near-term revenue: HOOD is positioning itself as the financial infrastructure layer for the AI agent economy — the first regulated brokerage with native MCP integration for third-party AI agents. If AI-driven investing becomes mainstream within 3–5 years, HOOD's first-mover infrastructure position could be its most valuable asset. Also launched: the Agentic Credit Card, enabling AI agents to make purchases via HOOD's card ecosystem.
Near-term, agentic trading drives incremental options and equities volume (agents trade more frequently than humans). Medium-term, it drives crypto and prediction market volume as those asset classes are added. Long-term, it could redefine the entire ARPU model — an active agentic account could generate 2–4x the revenue of a passive account.
Timeline confidence: MEDIUM — too new to model precisely, but the direction is clear
Catalyst 6: International Monetization — 2027 STORY
Current: 1M+ international funded accounts, minimal revenue | 2027 Target: 2–3M accounts, $100M+ annual contribution
UK crypto launched July 2026. Singapore live. WonderFi (Canada) acquired. The strategy is full-ecosystem launches in each market rather than piecemeal rollouts. International prediction markets approval in 2027 would be the key accelerant.
Timeline confidence: MEDIUM — users growing fast, monetization lagging by 12–18 months

08 · CONCLUSION & CONVICTION ASSESSMENT
CONCLUSION & CONVICTION ASSESSMENT
Investment Thesis Summary
Robinhood is no longer the meme-stock trading app of 2021. It is a diversified, highly profitable financial platform with a 42% net margin, $5B in annualized revenue, and a product pipeline that is actively delivering new revenue streams independent of crypto. The stock has de-rated 39% from its ATH while the business has become structurally stronger — creating a materially better risk/reward entry point than existed six months ago.
The core thesis rests on three pillars:
Existing business compounding — options, margin book, Gold subscriptions, and equities continue to grow at above-market rates
New product optionality — prediction markets already proven, perps imminent, credit card scaling, banking deepening switching costs
Platform positioning — agentic trading infrastructure and Robinhood Chain position HOOD as the financial OS for the next generation of investors, a narrative that could re-rate the multiple significantly if it plays out
Conviction Level
Overall Conviction: MODERATE–HIGH
This is not a high-certainty investment — HOOD carries a beta of 3.0, meaningful regulatory exposure, and significant earnings cyclicality tied to trading volumes. The bear case is real and involves genuine downside of 37–55%. However, the weight of evidence — 17 of 21 analysts bullish, multiple catalysts already in motion, management consistently beating estimates, and a 39% price correction from the ATH — tilts the risk/reward favorably.
The Answer to Your Core Question: Expected Return at 75%+ Confidence
Rather than a single price, the 75%+ confidence range means we need to identify the outcome that covers the base case plus a portion of the bull case — i.e., the return that is achieved in all but the bear and extreme scenarios.
At 75%+ confidence (ruling out the bear case at 15% and most of the extreme bull at 10%):
| Horizon | 75%+ Confidence Return Range | Central Estimate | Price Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Year (Aug 2027) | -7% to +39% | ~+12% | ~$87–$130, central ~$105 |
| 2 Years (Aug 2028) | +17% to +81% | ~+37% | ~$109–$169, central ~$128 |
In plain terms:
- 011 year from now, there is a 75%+ probability HOOD is somewhere between flat and +39%, with the single most likely outcome being approximately +12% (~$105). The risk of a meaningful loss exists but requires either a macro shock, a regulatory event, or a simultaneous stalling of multiple catalysts.
- 022 years from now, there is a 75%+ probability HOOD is between +17% and +81%, with the most likely outcome being approximately +37% (~$128). Time is the key variable — the longer the holding period, the more the non-crypto catalyst compounding works in the investor's favor and the more the bear case probability shrinks.
The Single Most Important Thing to Watch
If forced to identify one metric above all others — it is prediction market quarterly revenue. It is the clearest real-time signal of whether HOOD is successfully diversifying away from crypto, whether Rothera is scaling as management expects, and whether the platform narrative is strengthening or weakening. Two consecutive quarters above $200M would be strongly validating. Two consecutive quarters below $130M would materially challenge the thesis.
